Four Ways to Prevent Varicose Veins from Developing when you are Pregnant

If you are pregnant, there are many things you may worry about. These can include what you will name your baby, how things will change after the baby is born, what you will need to prepare for your baby’s birth, and more. The last thing you will want to worry about is having varicose veins.

Varicose veins can appear during pregnancy as your growing uterus puts pressure on the big vein in your leg. Such pressure makes it harder for blood to flow through your circulatory system. As a result, your blood valves may fail. Once they fail, blood will pool in your veins and appear through your skin as varicose veins. Although pregnancy increases your chances of developing varicose veins, there are some things you can do to prevent the condition from happening. But, in case you have varicose veins, you don’t need to worry since treatment procedures are often sans douleur. Here’s what you can do to avoid having varicose veins.

Alternate your Position throughout the Day

Standing or sitting for long periods of time can cause varicose veins so alternate your position throughout the day. When you are in your third trimester, you may be too tired to walk around or stand up, so try to prop up your feet above your heart when you sit. This will make it easier for your blood to flow from your feet back up to your heart.

Wear Flat Shoes

As you walk, the pressure of your heel hitting the floor will contract the muscles in your calves, propelling blood from your feet back up to your legs. But, when you wear high heels, the muscles in your calves stay contracted which makes it harder for blood to move through your lower circulatory system. That is why you should not wear high heels when pregnant to avoid varicose vein development.

Consume Fibrous Foods

Constipation can cause you to strain and when you are pregnant, this can contribute to the development of varicose veins. Ensure you consume lots of high-fiber foods for healthy digestion. If your diet does not provide you with enough fiber, consult with your obstetrician to know if you can take some fiber supplements while pregnant.

Be Aware of Available Treatments for Varicose Veins

In case you develop varicose veins while pregnant, you can get rid of them when your baby is born. Modern procedures for treating varicose veins are effective and safe and require little recovery time. In fact, you can get it done and return to your normal activities after the procedure.

Before undergoing Sclerotherapy, it’s important to consult with a vein specialist. They will assess your condition and provide instructions on how to prepare for the procedure to ensure optimal results.
